Los Angeles, CA - April 2007 - Bert-Co, a key manufacturer of folding cartons, point-of-purchase materials and specialty packaging, announces its first awards of the year. Paperboard Packaging Council's 2007 national competition awarded Gold placement for Wynton Marsalis "In This House On This Morning" DVD packaging.
The Marsalis package is a set-up box with a DVD tray surrounded by a raised edge. The package opens like a book and in-turn the raised edges simulate old pages of a hymnal. "Wynton Marsalis; In This House, On This Morning" title along with a gold trumpet are embossed and foil stamped. "The final passes of the Wynton package truly gives it an excellent effect; the gold pops out at you and give the package an authentic look," states Sara Torres, Marketing Manager at Bert-Co.
Other winners in the PPC packaging competition were M*A*S*H, Broken Saints, The Hills Have Eyes Unrated, and X-Men The Last Stand. These received an Excellence Award. "M*A*S*H The Martinis & Medicine Collection is the ultimate fan product because it has the entire series packed into this functional package," states Torres. It also comes with a clip board and has easy fold out sleeves to retrieve and replace DVDs back in their order. "This is a package that makes you want to purchase the product and keep it indefinitely," adds Torres.
The Broken Saints packaging truly illustrates Bert-Co's specialty packaging capabilities. This package uses both plastic and foil board that accentuates the dark and mysterious look that the film conveys. "Once the customer brings Broken Saints home and opens the package up, they like how it functions," states Torres. This package holds four DVDs in Bert-Co's Cine-Pak® book style product. In order to retrieve the DVDs you must flop open both right and left top corners. Main characters are shown throughout the package.
Both The Hills Have Eyes and X-Men Last Stand are typical "o" sleeves that wrap around a regular amaray case. The special thing about these sleeves is the use of different materials and embossing techniques. The Hills Have Eyes package has a gel pack glued on the front side of the o-sleeve. The "gel pack" has in it red liquid to give the feel of blood. The X-Men Last Stand uses sculpture embossing (a combination of deboss and embossing) plus foil stamp that makes the package stand out. "The X-Men Last Stand o-sleeve is printed on pvc, which is not the usual substrate for foil stamping and embossing, but it looks great," says Torres.
